Sonia + Graham: A Life Together in New Zealand
Sonia moved from the UK to New Zealand to be with her partner Graham who has lived in New Zealand for 24 years. Sonia was granted Residence under the Family: Partnership Category earlier this year. Since gaining Residence, Sonia has entered full-time employment in the healthcare industry and now lives in rural Auckland with Graham. The couple spend most of their free time exploring the city, wining and dining, and enjoying the local sights and sounds. We got a chance to catch up with the lovebirds and chat to them about life in New Zealand.
In Sonia's Words...
I love my life in New Zealand. I'm so happy I took the courage to immigrate to this wonderful country. I thought I would miss my old life back in the UK, but I can honestly say I have not missed it at all. Yes I do miss my family and friends, but with Skype I get to see them each week. I loved New Zealand from the very first day here, everyone you meet is so, so friendly and welcoming.
Everyone has time for each other, including people you have only just met. You feel you are not rushed here, it is a far more relaxing lifestyle [than in the UK]. New Zealand is very safe, I don’t feel threatened when go out. There are many, many places to visit, the scenery is so beautiful, and the beaches, parks are very clean. The health care system works very well, yes you do have to pay a small amount to see a doctor, but with having a good health care system it is worth it.
The only real thing I have found challenging is understanding the Kiwi accent, but that will come in time. New Zealanders will do things differently from the country you come from, and you may find this strange at first but just go with how they do things, fit into the way they do things, do your research and you will be ok.
